Screen Time and a third-party app blocker aren't really two different technologies on iOS — nearly every third-party blocker on iPhone is built using Apple's own Screen Time and Family Controls frameworks, since Apple doesn't let outside apps silently intercept or kill other apps any other way. The practical difference isn't the blocking mechanism underneath; it's the interface on top of it, what the unlock flow looks like, and whether a separate passcode genuinely sits between you and turning it off. Both, in other words, are asking the same underlying question — how much does it cost, in that specific moment, to get back in — and the answer depends far more on what stands at the unlock than on which brand's logo is on the block screen. Neither is a fake or watered-down version of the other; they're two interfaces sitting on top of largely the same iOS permission model.
What Screen Time actually does
Set up for yourself, Screen Time lets you configure App Limits (a daily time budget per app or category, after which the app is greyed out), Downtime (a scheduled window where only allowed apps are reachable), and Communication Limits. When a limit is hit, iOS shows a native block screen with an "Ask For More Time" or "One More Minute" option — and without a separate Screen Time passcode, dismissing that screen or simply going into Settings and raising or deleting the limit takes a matter of seconds, because Screen Time set on your own device, for yourself, has no independent enforcement layer beyond your own intention to leave it alone. Set up through Family Sharing for a child's device, the same App Limits exist, but the passcode required to change them belongs to the parent's device, which is the entire structural difference between Screen Time as a personal focus tool and Screen Time as a parental control. It's also worth noting Screen Time's category-based Downtime doesn't distinguish between apps within a category the way an individually curated blocklist can — a Downtime window that allows "Productivity" apps will allow all of them, including ones that happen to also be a source of distraction for a specific person, which a category-level system has no way of knowing about. It's also worth remembering that Downtime's allowed-apps list applies uniformly to everyone using the device, which matters less on a personal phone but is worth checking carefully on a shared family device where different people might need different exceptions.
Where a dedicated blocker adds something
Because most third-party iOS blockers sit on top of the same Screen Time and Family Controls APIs, they generally can't out-restrict what Apple's own settings permit on a self-managed device — a blocker without a separate passcode-holder is exactly as reversible, mechanically, as Screen Time is. What a dedicated blocker adds instead is what happens at the unlock moment itself: a different, and often more deliberate, interface than "tap to ask for more time." Some replace the request with a delay, some with a typed code retrieved elsewhere, and some — including Mr. Grummel — with a quiz question that has to be answered correctly, rather than simply dismissed. None of these add a technical barrier Screen Time itself lacks; they add a specific kind of friction to the exact moment self-control tends to be weakest. This matters practically: someone who's tried Screen Time and found it easy to talk themselves past isn't necessarily missing willpower Screen Time users elsewhere have — they may simply be running the exact configuration (no passcode, or a known one) that makes the underlying mechanism weak regardless of who's using it. A dedicated blocker's narrower, per-app blocklist is often the more useful configuration precisely because it can target the two or three specific apps that are actually a problem, rather than an entire category that happens to include several apps you genuinely need.
Using both together
Because the two aren't mutually exclusive, a reasonable setup for many people is Screen Time's Downtime for a fixed nightly or work-hours window — since a scheduled restriction genuinely doesn't require you to remember to activate it — paired with a friction-based blocker for the apps that need something more than a timer during the hours Downtime isn't active. Screen Time's category-level Downtime is coarse — it schedules by time of day, not by moment of temptation — while a friction-based blocker is active continuously, at every single open, regardless of the clock. Together they cover both failure modes: the moment you forget to set anything up, and the moment you remember but reach for the app anyway. The two also complement each other on the specific failure mode each is weak against: Downtime alone fails the moment you forget it wasn't scheduled for right now; friction alone still requires you to have opened the app to encounter it, so a scheduled restriction covering hours you're unlikely to be paying attention closes a gap a moment-of-open tool doesn't. Testing both for a week or two before settling on a permanent setup is a reasonable way to find out which specific gap actually matters most for your own habits, since the answer differs a lot from one person to the next.
Where Mr. Grummel fits
Mr. Grummel doesn't replace Screen Time's scheduling — it isn't trying to. It sits alongside it as the unlock-moment layer: when you do open a blocked app, getting back in costs answering a real question, not tapping through a native "one more minute" prompt. In practice, that means Screen Time can keep doing the scheduling work it's already good at, while the specific unlock moment gets a different kind of resistance layered on top of it, rather than needing to be replaced wholesale. Framed that way, choosing between them is less about picking a winner and more about identifying which specific moment in your day currently has no friction in it at all.
