The far more commonly cited "21 days" figure isn't from this or any habit-formation study at all — it traces back to Maxwell Maltz's 1960 book Psycho-Cybernetics, which was actually discussing how long it took his cosmetic surgery patients to adjust psychologically to a changed appearance, not a controlled study of habit formation. Getting this right matters beyond simple trivia — a false, overly optimistic timeline sets people up to feel like they've failed at day 22 when the real, evidenced range suggests they may still be well within a normal course for genuine change.

What the 2010 study actually did and found

Lally and colleagues followed 96 participants over 84 days, each choosing their own new health-related behavior (eating a piece of fruit with lunch, a 15-minute run, and similar), and measured how automatic the behavior became over time using a validated self-report scale. The headline finding — a median of 66 days to reach 95% of maximum automaticity — comes with an important caveat worth knowing: only 39 of the original 96 participants produced usable data curves that could be modeled this way, since habit formation in the real world is messy and not everyone's data fit the statistical model cleanly.
