Does grayscale mode reduce screen time?

Yes, measurably — but the honest version of that answer is narrower than most articles about it suggest. Grayscale changes how long you stay once you're in an app. It doesn't change how often you pick the phone up.

Yes — switching your phone's display to grayscale measurably reduces screen time, and this is one of the better-replicated findings in this space: at least five independent studies since 2020, using different methods and populations, converge on a reduction in the range of roughly 20 to 40 minutes of screen time per day. The more important, less-repeated part of the finding is what grayscale doesn't do: the best-designed of these studies found no effect on how often people picked their phone up in the first place, and no measurable improvement to mood, sleep, or productivity — it changes engagement once you're already looking at the screen, not the urge to check it. It's worth trying this specifically as a low-stakes first experiment before adopting anything more restrictive, given how easy it is to turn on and off and how consistent the underlying research has been across different research groups.

The mechanism: why removing color changes behavior

The proposed mechanism, discussed across several of these studies, is that color itself functions as part of what makes an app rewarding to linger in — bright notification badges, saturated app icons, and vividly designed feeds are visually reinforcing in a way flat greyscale isn't, so the same content becomes marginally less compelling to keep scrolling through once color is removed. This is consistent with the specific pattern researchers found: video-watching time in one study didn't change under grayscale, while social media and general browsing time did — suggesting the effect is strongest for the kind of open-ended, low-intent scrolling that color-driven visual reward plausibly sustains, and weaker for content you deliberately sought out (a specific video) regardless of what color it's rendered in. It's also worth noting the mechanism proposed here is plausible but not fully proven at the neural level — the studies measure behavioral outcomes (time spent, self-reported urges) rather than directly testing the color-as-reward hypothesis, so it's fair to treat the "why" as a reasonable explanation rather than an established fact in its own right. A related, more speculative idea sometimes mentioned alongside grayscale — that removing color reduces dopamine response to notification badges specifically — hasn't been directly tested in these studies and is worth treating as a plausible extension of the finding rather than something the research itself established.

What the research actually found, study by study

Holte & Ferraro (2020, The Social Science Journal) had 73 college students switch to grayscale for 8–10 days and found total screen time dropped by roughly 37.9 minutes per day, concentrated in social media and browsing. Wickord & Quaiser-Pohl (2023, Computers in Human Behavior Reports) followed 92 participants after at least 24 hours in grayscale and found usage time decreased, correlating with self-reported problematic smartphone use. The most methodologically careful of the group, Dekker & Baumgartner (2024, Mobile Media & Communication), used experience-sampling (repeated in-the-moment check-ins rather than one-off surveys) across 84 participants and found screen time cut by 20 to 50 minutes a day and self-reported stress reduced — but explicitly found no effect on subjective well-being, productivity, or sleep quality, and, critically, no change in how many times per day people unlocked their phone at all. A 2026 cross-over trial in medical students (Frontiers in Digital Health) found the same direction of effect in a professional, high-stress population, adding some confidence the result generalizes beyond college students. Two smaller but consistent details across these studies are worth noting: none found a meaningful gender difference in the effect size, and the reduction tended to hold for the duration of each study's follow-up period rather than fading out within the first few days, suggesting the effect isn't purely a novelty response to a new setting. It's also worth noting sample sizes across these studies range from under 100 to a few hundred participants, respectable for this kind of behavioral research but modest enough that individual results are worth weighing against the pattern across all of them together, rather than any single study in isolation.

The honest, narrower claim worth acting on

Given this, the defensible claim is: grayscale is a low-cost, easy-to-reverse way to reduce the amount of time you spend once you've opened an app — worth trying for genuinely idle scrolling — but it is not, based on the current evidence, a fix for the separate problem of picking the phone up too often in the first place, and it hasn't been shown to reliably improve sleep, mood, or output on its own. Anyone trying grayscale specifically to reduce phone pickups, rather than time-per-pickup, is likely to be disappointed by what the research actually supports. It's a reasonable, essentially free thing to try for a week given the consistency of the underlying research, as long as the expectation going in matches what's actually been measured rather than the more sweeping claims some secondary coverage of these studies has made. On iOS, grayscale can be toggled quickly via an Accessibility Shortcut (triple-click the side button, once configured) which makes it practical to switch on during a work block and off again afterward, rather than leaving it on permanently.

Where Mr. Grummel fits

Because grayscale and a quiz-gated blocker address different halves of the problem — one reduces time spent once you're in, the other raises the cost of getting in at all — they're not competing tools; Mr. Grummel is aimed specifically at the pickup itself, the part the research suggests grayscale alone doesn't touch. Trying both together — grayscale for the scrolling that does happen, a friction-based block for the opens that don't need to — addresses more of the actual behavior than either alone, since the evidence suggests they're acting on genuinely different parts of the habit. Neither tool claims to be a complete fix on its own, and the research above is specific enough to make that an honest, rather than a hedging, thing to say.
