Digital Wellbeing, built into most Android phones for free under Settings, bundles three distinct tools: Focus Mode (pause a chosen set of apps entirely), App Timers (a daily time budget per app), and Bedtime Mode (a scheduled or charging-triggered wind-down that switches the display to grayscale and applies Do Not Disturb). They're often discussed as one feature, but they solve different problems and are worth understanding separately before deciding which to set up. Understanding the three as separate tools, rather than one blurry "Digital Wellbeing" setting, makes it much easier to pick the one that actually matches the specific problem you're trying to solve. Knowing which of the three actually matches your situation saves time compared with toggling all three and hoping one of them helps.
Focus Mode: the mechanism
Focus Mode lets you select specific apps to pause, either manually, on a schedule, or via a Quick Settings tile on some devices. While paused, selected apps are greyed out and inaccessible, and — importantly — cannot send notifications either, unlike a simple app timer. A "Take a break" option temporarily unpauses everything for a set window if genuinely needed. Some manufacturer skins (Samsung's "Work Time"/"Me Time" presets, for instance) layer additional scene-based profiles on top of stock Focus Mode, letting different app sets pause depending on context — worth checking your specific device's settings, since this isn't confirmed as a universal AOSP behavior and varies by manufacturer. It's worth trying Focus Mode's manual "pause now" option for a short period before committing to a full schedule, since the effect of a fully paused app — no icon, no notifications, nothing to accidentally tap — is more disruptive to a habitual reach than a mere time budget, and some people find it a more effective starting point. Focus Mode's schedule option is also worth combining with a recurring calendar block for the same hours, since seeing both reinforce each other — the phone pausing apps, the calendar showing why — tends to make the restriction feel more intentional than either alone. It also makes the boundary easier to explain to family members sharing the same household schedule.
App Timers and Bedtime Mode: the mechanism
App Timers track per-app usage and close the app once the daily budget is spent, dimming its icon until midnight reset — covered in more detail in our App Limits on Android guide. Bedtime Mode is schedule- or trigger-based (fixed times, or activating while charging within a set window) and, when active, switches the display to grayscale, disables Always-On Display, dims the wallpaper and lock screen, and can apply Dark theme specifically during that window; it also integrates with Do Not Disturb and deactivates automatically at your alarm time. The grayscale switch specifically has real research behind an effect on screen time (see our grayscale guide for the studies), while the broader "better sleep" framing of Bedtime Mode is a reasonable but less rigorously tested claim. Bedtime Mode's automatic deactivation at your alarm time is a small but genuinely useful detail — it means the grayscale and Do Not Disturb settings don't linger into the morning the way a purely time-based schedule might if you wake up earlier or later than planned. It's worth checking whether your specific device model supports the manufacturer-level scene presets mentioned above before assuming stock Focus Mode is the only option available, since some Samsung and other OEM devices offer meaningfully more granular controls than base Android provides. Checking this once, early on, avoids the frustration of assuming a feature is missing when it is simply in a different menu on a particular device.
The gap that shows up consistently in independent reporting
Multiple independent tech outlets (Android Police, Android Central, among others) have reported the same practical limitation across Focus Mode and App Timers: both operate at the whole-app level, so pausing or timing an app like Instagram does nothing to stop the same content being reached through Chrome's mobile site instead, since the browser itself, unless separately paused, stays fully open. As of the most recent reporting available, third-party developers can only build Do Not Disturb-based schedules using Digital Wellbeing's exposed APIs — deeper Focus Mode and App Timer control remains first-party-only, which is worth noting as it may change in future Android releases. This gap isn't unique to Android — the same in-browser workaround exists on iOS for apps restricted only at the app level — but it's worth flagging specifically here since Digital Wellbeing's own marketing doesn't always make the distinction between app-level and content-level blocking clear. Awareness of this gap alone changes what "I paused Instagram" actually protects against — it stops the app, not necessarily the underlying urge, which may simply redirect toward whatever's still reachable. Testing the workaround yourself once, deliberately, is a fast way to confirm whether it applies to your own specific device and browser combination.
Where Mr. Grummel fits
Mr. Grummel's blocking, like Digital Wellbeing's own tools, operates at the app level rather than the in-browser URL level, so it shares rather than closes this specific gap — worth factoring in if the browser route is where your own distraction actually happens. Anyone whose actual problem is browser-based scrolling, on either platform, needs a tool that reaches into the browser specifically, which most app-level blockers, ours included, don't by default. Knowing this in advance is more useful than discovering it after a Focus Mode or App Timer setup quietly stops working the way it was expected to. Framed honestly, that shared limitation is a reason to check both layers, not a reason to distrust either tool individually.
