Screen time statistics worth trusting

A lot of the numbers that get repeated about phone use trace back to weak or unverifiable sources. Here's what actually comes from credible, checkable research.

The most reliably sourced statistics in this space are narrower and more specific than the round, dramatic numbers that tend to circulate — Common Sense Media's 2023 census found teens receive a median of 237 notifications a day, with some receiving up to 498, and check their phones over 100 times a day; Pew Research's 2024 survey found 38% of US teens say they personally spend too much time on their smartphone. Both are large, methodologically documented studies from established research organizations, which puts them on considerably firmer ground than several of the more viral statistics discussed below. Collecting the reliable numbers in one place is also useful for spotting the pattern in which kinds of claims tend to hold up and which don't — a pattern that's worth applying to any new statistic that shows up in the future, not just the specific ones listed here.

Statistics that hold up under scrutiny

Common Sense Media's notification-count and check-frequency figures come from a large, nationally representative survey of US tweens and teens with a published, reviewable methodology, which is a meaningfully stronger basis than a lot of the statistics that circulate on social media without any traceable source. Pew Research's 38% figure — teens self-reporting they spend too much time on their phone — is similarly well-documented and worth noting for what it actually measures: a subjective self-assessment, not a device-measured usage total, which is a different (and arguably more directly relevant) kind of data point about how teens themselves experience their own use. A validated academic measurement tool also exists in this space: the Smartphone Addiction Scale (Kwon et al., 2013, PLOS ONE), a ten-item, peer-reviewed instrument used in numerous subsequent studies, which is worth knowing about as the actual research-grade way this pattern gets measured, distinct from informal quizzes online using the same name. It's also worth noting the SAS-SV (the shorter, ten-item version) was specifically validated for adolescents in the original study, and while it and related instruments have since been used and adapted across a range of ages in follow-up research, that origin is worth knowing if you come across the scale being applied to a very different population. It's also worth checking publication dates specifically, since even a genuinely well-sourced statistic from several years ago may no longer reflect current usage patterns, given how quickly both apps and usage habits shift year to year.

Statistics worth treating with caution

Self-report survey figures on phone checks per day — such as a commonly cited 186-times-a-day figure from a 2026 consumer survey — should be read as self-estimates, not device-logged counts, and self-estimates of one's own phone-checking frequency are consistently shown in the research literature to be unreliable, usually undercounting relative to actual logged behavior. This doesn't make such surveys worthless, but it means treating the specific number as an order-of-magnitude estimate rather than a precise figure. More seriously, the popular claim that human attention span has shrunk to "eight seconds, shorter than a goldfish" has been directly traced by multiple fact-checking investigations, including BBC journalist Simon Maybin's 2017 reporting, to an unsupported 2015 report and a defunct "Statistic Brain" citation with no verifiable underlying study — it should be treated as a debunked myth, not a statistic, and is covered in more detail in our attention span guide. Self-report surveys aren't inherently useless — the Pew Research figure on teens' own sense that they use their phone too much is genuinely valuable precisely because it captures subjective experience a device log can't — the caution is specifically about self-reported behavioral counts (how many times, how many minutes), which is where memory and estimation errors compound. Where a statistic combines several different underlying surveys or countries, as global aggregator reports often do, it's worth checking whether the combination method is described at all, since averaging across very different measurement approaches can produce a number that doesn't cleanly represent any single underlying reality.

How to read any phone-use statistic responsibly

Before repeating or acting on a phone-use statistic, it's worth checking three things: whether the underlying study is named and traceable (rather than "a recent study found" with no citation), whether the data comes from device logs or self-report (device logs are more reliable for behavior counts, self-report is more reliable for subjective experience like "do you feel you use it too much"), and whether the sample and methodology are described anywhere. Numbers from Pew, Common Sense Media, Ofcom, and peer-reviewed journals generally clear this bar; numbers that only ever appear in listicles with no named source generally don't. It's also worth being skeptical of statistics that sound suspiciously precise or dramatic without a clear source — real research findings usually come with named authors, a publication, and a described sample, while myths and unsupported figures tend to circulate without any of the three attached, repeated instead through simple familiarity. A simple, practical habit worth adopting is checking whether a cited statistic appears, in the same specific form, on the original research organization's own website, rather than only in secondary articles that may have altered or exaggerated it along the way.

None of these statistics are used to oversell what a blocker can do — the honest reading of this research is that notification volume and check frequency are real, measurable, and high for a lot of people, which is a reasonable case for reducing reflexive opens, not a claim that any single tool eliminates the pattern entirely. Being this careful about sourcing isn't pedantry for its own sake — a statistic used to justify a real behavior change deserves the same scrutiny as any other claim being acted on. Holding any statistic used on this page, or anywhere else making a similar case, to that same standard is a reasonable thing to expect as a reader, not an unusual demand.
