Why almost everyone on Earth lives within a short drive of water

Roughly ten percent of Earth's land holds the overwhelming majority of its people, clustered around coastlines, rivers, and a handful of fertile regions.

Human population is not spread evenly across the planet's habitable land — it's extraordinarily concentrated. A relatively small share of Earth's total land area holds the overwhelming majority of its population, while vast stretches of technically habitable territory remain sparsely populated or almost entirely empty. The pattern isn't random: population distribution tracks closely with a small number of physical geography factors that have shaped where humans settle for as long as agriculture and trade have existed.

Water, flat land, and a workable climate

Three physical factors do most of the explanatory work in population distribution maps. Proximity to fresh water — rivers, lakes, and reliable rainfall — has always been essential for drinking, agriculture, and, historically, transport, which is why river valleys have anchored dense settlement since the earliest civilisations, from the Nile to the Indus to the Yangtze. Coastal proximity adds trade and fishing access on top of fresh water's basic necessity, which is part of why such a large share of the world's major cities sit on or near a coastline rather than deep inland. Flat, low-elevation land is dramatically easier to farm, build on, and move across than steep or mountainous terrain, concentrating population onto plains and lowlands even within countries that have plenty of overall land area to spare. Climate matters too — extremely arid, extremely cold, or otherwise agriculturally unproductive regions, however large, tend to support only sparse populations regardless of how much raw land they cover.

Why the pattern has proven so durable

These physical advantages compound rather than simply add up: a location with reliable fresh water, good soil, moderate climate, and easy transport access doesn't just support somewhat more people than a location lacking those features — it can support dramatically more, and dense early settlement in such locations then attracts further infrastructure, trade, and economic activity, reinforcing the initial advantage over centuries. Modern technology — irrigation, climate control, long-distance transport — has loosened some of these historical constraints, letting substantial populations exist in locations that would once have been effectively unviable, but it hasn't come close to erasing the underlying pattern; population maps today still track physical geography's basic advantages remarkably closely, even after centuries of technological change that could, in principle, have redistributed people far more evenly.

What we're still unsure about

The broad physical drivers of population distribution — water access, flat terrain, favourable climate — are well established and consistently confirmed across regions and historical periods. What's more actively studied and debated is how much these physical factors will continue to dominate as climate change reshapes agricultural viability, water availability, and habitability in specific regions over coming decades — some currently favourable regions may become less so, and some currently marginal regions may become more viable, and geographers don't yet have full confidence in exactly how much of the world's current, centuries-old settlement pattern will hold up against those pressures, or how quickly population might realistically redistribute in response.
