Most painting technique treats the canvas as a flat surface to be covered with a relatively thin, even layer of paint, with light and shadow rendered entirely through colour and value choices on that flat surface. Impasto works differently: it applies paint thickly enough, often built up with a brush or a flat metal palette knife, that individual brushstrokes and ridges of paint stand up in genuine physical relief off the canvas's surface, thick enough to catch and cast real, physical light and shadow, rather than relying solely on painted colour to represent where light and shadow would fall.
Real physical texture, not just painted illusion
In a conventionally thin paint layer, any sense of texture or dimensionality a viewer perceives comes entirely from how the artist has rendered light and shadow in paint on an otherwise genuinely flat surface — an illusion built through colour and value alone. Impasto instead creates actual physical texture the viewer can often see, and sometimes even feel, ridges and peaks of paint standing measurably off the canvas, catching real ambient light from whatever direction it happens to be coming from in the room where the painting is displayed. This means an impasto painting's appearance can shift meaningfully depending on the actual lighting conditions and the viewer's own physical position relative to it, in a way a thinly and evenly painted canvas generally doesn't — the texture is a genuine three-dimensional physical property of the paint itself, not solely an effect achieved through painted illusion.
Thick paint changes how a painting is built, not just how it looks
Working in heavy impasto changes an artist's actual process, not just the finished image's appearance: thickly applied paint takes considerably longer to dry than a thin layer does, meaning an artist working in heavy impasto often has to plan their approach to overlapping and building up successive layers quite differently than they would with thinner, faster-drying applications, and the resulting paint surface's own physical durability and long-term stability can differ meaningfully from a thinly applied one as well. Historically, painters have used impasto for a wide range of different expressive purposes — from rendering physically textured real-world subjects like tree bark or fabric with unusually direct, tactile physical correspondence, to using visibly thick, energetic brushwork more abstractly, as a way of conveying the physical, gestural energy of the artist's own hand at the moment of painting.
What we're still unsure about
Impasto's basic technique, its physical creation of real surface relief, and its historical use across many different painting traditions are all well documented in art history and materials conservation research. What's a genuinely live, practical concern in art conservation is exactly how heavily impasted paintings age and physically hold up over long timescales — thick paint layers can develop cracking or structural instability in ways that differ meaningfully from thinner, more conventional paint applications, and conservators are still actively researching the best practical methods for stabilising and preserving heavily impasted historical works, a genuinely unresolved and evolving area of conservation science rather than one with a single fully settled standard practice.
