The invention that created a reading public that had never existed before

A hand-copied book reached the handful of people near its one copy. A printed book could put the same page in front of strangers, at the same time.

Before Johannes Gutenberg's movable-type press, built in Mainz around the 1440s, every book in Europe was copied out by hand, letter by letter, largely by scribes working in monasteries and a small number of professional workshops. A single manuscript Bible could take a skilled scribe on the order of a year of steady work. Books were rare, expensive, and concentrated among clergy, nobility, and a narrow scholarly elite. Movable type changed the arithmetic of copying a text entirely — and in doing so, it created something that arguably hadn't existed before: a reading public.

From one copy a year to a genuinely different scale

A printer using movable type could set a page once and pull off copy after identical copy, at a pace no scribe could approach. Within about half a century of Gutenberg's press, printing had spread to cities across Europe, and the number of books in circulation had grown by orders of magnitude compared with the entire hand-copied manuscript tradition that preceded it. The historian Elizabeth Eisenstein, in her influential study The Printing Press as an Agent of Change, argued that this wasn't simply "more of the same" — it was a genuinely different kind of object moving through society, identical copies reaching readers who had never met each other and never would.

Standardising language, expanding who could read it

Printing also pushed language itself toward standardisation. A printer selling copies across a wide region had a commercial reason to settle on one spelling and grammar for a run, rather than reproduce the wide local variation typical of hand-copied manuscripts, and that pressure nudged European vernacular languages toward more fixed, shared forms. At the same time, cheaper books widened who could plausibly own or access one, pulling reading beyond clergy and nobility toward merchants and a broader urban public — the beginnings, in Eisenstein's account, of readers scattered across a wide geography engaging with the very same fixed text, together, for the first time in history.

What we're still unsure about

Eisenstein's thesis — crediting the press with outsized, near-revolutionary effects on the Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, and the standardisation of knowledge generally — has been challenged by later historians, notably Adrian Johns, who argue that print's authority and its standardising power weren't automatic properties of the technology itself. Johns contends they were unevenly, actively constructed over a longer period by printers, publishers, censors, and readers negotiating what a printed text could be trusted to mean, rather than something the press simply delivered on its own the moment it was invented. How much causal weight belongs to the invention itself, versus the social and economic conditions that shaped how it was actually used, remains a genuinely contested question among historians of the book.
