The chord that makes your ear expect what comes next

A dominant chord sounds unfinished — built from a clash of notes your ear hears as tension waiting to resolve.

Play a simple chord progression in a major key and stop on the second-to-last chord, and most listeners — trained musicians or not — will feel a kind of itch, a sense that something has to happen next. That's not a learned musical convention layered onto neutral sound. It's functional harmony: the idea that chords built on different notes of a scale carry distinct roles, pulling toward or away from a sense of "home," and one chord in particular, the dominant, is built to create exactly that pull.

Tonic, dominant, and the pull between them

In a major key, the tonic chord — built on the scale's first note — functions as home base, the chord that sounds stable and resolved, the one a piece of music can end on without feeling unfinished. The dominant chord, built on the scale's fifth note, is harmony's primary source of tension: it contains a note, the leading tone, sitting just a half-step below the tonic note, and that half-step gap creates a strong pull for the ear, a sense that the leading tone "wants" to resolve upward into the tonic. When a dominant chord moves to a tonic chord — the progression called an authentic cadence — that pull resolves, and the motion reads to most listeners as an ending, a sense of arrival.

Why this feels automatic rather than learned

Functional harmony isn't an arbitrary rule imposed on music from outside; it's a formalised description of a psychoacoustic effect that emerges from the physical relationships between pitches — how close two notes sit to each other, and how much a chord's internal notes clash or align with the harmonic overtones the ear expects. That's part of why the tonic-dominant relationship shows up so pervasively across centuries of Western tonal music, and why listeners without formal training reliably feel the tension-and-release pattern even if they can't name a single chord: the effect is baked into how pitched sound is processed, not just into music theory textbooks describing it after the fact.

What we're still unsure about

The description of tonic-dominant tension and resolution is extremely well established within the Western tonal tradition specifically, but it isn't a universal law of how all human ears process all music. Musical traditions built on entirely different tuning systems, scale structures, or harmonic conventions — much of the world's music, historically and today — don't organise tension and resolution the same way at all, and some don't foreground harmonic tension in this sense as a central structural device. How much of the tonic-dominant pull is a deep, cross-cultural feature of human pitch perception versus a learned convention specific to listeners raised on Western tonal music remains a genuinely open question in music cognition research.
